Common questions
It runs a binary search over JPEG quality levels, encoding the image repeatedly until it finds the highest quality that still fits your ceiling. If quality alone cannot reach the target, it steps the dimensions down and searches again.
JPEG size is not a continuous dial — each quality step changes the file by an unpredictable amount. The tool guarantees at or below your number, which is what upload validators check, rather than an exact byte match that no encoder can promise.
It is a floor that stops the tool from destroying the image to satisfy an impossible target. If you ask a 4000 px photo to reach 8 KB, the tool will stop at your minimum quality and tell you, instead of returning something unusable.
Because reducing pixels is a far better route to a small file than reducing quality. Halving the longest edge cuts the pixel count to a quarter and usually looks better than the same file size achieved through compression alone.
